I have 20+ years of experience facilitating psychotherapeutic groups, including: (1) hundreds of critical incident debriefings for physicians, nurses, and care teams; (2) hundreds of workforce wellness groups on burnout, conflict resolution, stress management; (3) dozens of Balint and clinical process groups for psychotherapists, primary care providers, ER, OR, oncology and hospice teams; (4) dozens of groups with young children using art and play as developmental tools; (5) During the COVID years, I led 10–12 virtual support groups weekly for impacted care teams, and pioneered the successful use of anonymous polling and word clouds to foster safety and connection. I also have 25+ years of lived experience with chronic pain (sometimes at debilitating levels).

Results & outcomes

Preliminary results from recent 6-week groups show measurable benefits for participants living with chronic pain. On average, participants experienced a 20% reduction in emotional distress (measured by Kessler-10) and a 16% reduction in pain severity (measured by Brief Pain Inventory), along with an 8% decrease in pain interference with mood, activity, and sleep.

Therapeutic engagement was also notably high: the group’s working alliance ranked around the 85th percentile (measured by Working Alliance Inventory) compared to established psychotherapy norms, reflecting strong trust, collaboration, and safety.

Together, these findings suggest that this experiential, embodied group process supports meaningful improvements in both emotional and physical well-being, helping participants build greater ease, connection, and self-understanding in their relationship with pain.
